The Netherlands Dr Bert Mutsaers

Bert Mutsaers is a senior lecturer in physiotherapy at Avans University of Applied Sciences and a professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He has a long track record in clinical work, teaching, and research, especially in manual therapy and musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Since training in the 1990s, he’s combined private practice with postgraduate education, curriculum design, and professional policy work. He earned his PhD at Erasmus University Rotterdam, focusing on manual therapy and neck pain.
Over the years, he’s been involved in shaping professional standards, accreditation, and research in physiotherapy. His publications cover topics like clinical reasoning, red flags, practice variation, and how both patients and therapists think about pain and recovery.
Bert has also been active in several professional committees and boards, including the Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapy (KNGF) and Chronisch Zorgnet. Alongside his academic work, he writes columns and creates cartoons for professional journals, reflecting his interest in communication and visual storytelling in healthcare. In his free time, he enjoys drawing, designing visuals, and staying active with strength training and running.
